Gap in Your App

App hidden from App Store search? What to do

Test the search from another account and storefront, then check App Store Connect for messages and agreements. Read your metadata for trademarks or competitor names. Then send App Review a Contact Us request with your app ID and the affected storefronts, and ask directly whether search visibility is restricted.

Rule out a local problem first

You're not the only one. One developer on the Apple Developer Forums lost search visibility after an update, even for the exact name, while the direct link kept working. Another saw the app rank in India but vanish from US search. Those two cases are why you test more than one place before you blame Apple.

  1. Search the exact app name on a second device signed in with a different Apple ID. One forum poster had an app missing for a single US user while it showed up everywhere else.
  2. Change the storefront to two or three other countries and search again. If it shows up in some and not others, you have a regional problem, which helps when you write to Apple.
  3. In App Store Connect, open Pricing and Availability and confirm every country you expect is selected.
  4. Check Agreements, Tax, and Banking for anything pending. The developer in the India and US thread ruled those out first.

If you shipped a build in the last two days, a reply in the this Apple forum thread suggests waiting 24 to 48 hours for indexing. If you changed nothing, skip this one.

Read your metadata the way a reviewer would

I couldn't find any Apple page that documents a search penalty or a hidden-from-search status. What exists is anecdotal. One developer on a third-party forum described the same symptoms and traced them to a single trademark in the keyword field. They removed it, replied to Apple, and the app returned in search after about 48 hours. That is one report, and Apple hasn't confirmed it. It costs you nothing to check.

Open the app version page in App Store Connect and look at these fields:

  • Keywords (100 characters, comma-separated, no spaces after the commas). Remove competitor brand names and anyone else's trademark. Remove words you already use in the name or subtitle, since Apple indexes those separately.
  • Subtitle (30 characters). Same check for borrowed brand names.
  • Name under App Information (30 characters). Make sure it contains nothing that implies another company's product.

Keywords, name and subtitle all need a new version to change. Only promotional text can be edited without one. So if you find something, fix it and submit a new build, then say so in your message to Apple.

Contact Apple where it leaves a record

Apple's App Store support page lists App Review as the place to get details on a submission's status and to ask questions. The developer contact page lists App Review under Distribution. Use that Contact Us form.

Reply to App Review inside App Store Connect only works for a live submission. Apple's own help page calls it the best channel for an ongoing submission and says to use Contact Us for appeals. If you have a new build in review after fixing keywords, that thread is the one to use.

Put everything a person needs in the first message:

  • Your app ID and the exact app name.
  • The storefronts where search fails, and the date you first noticed.
  • That the direct link works and a search for the exact name returns nothing.
  • That you made no metadata changes (or what you changed, if you fixed something).
  • A direct question: is search visibility restricted for this app, and why?

Once App Review has replied, Apple says you can request a call from the same message window. If the form goes silent, post the app ID in the forum thread. In one forum case, a developer whose appeal sat for a week got an App Review reply in the thread saying they were investigating and would follow up in App Store Connect.

What to do while you wait

Share the direct App Store link with your users, since that still works. A guide on search delays gives the same advice for apps that can't be found by name.

Keep dated screenshots of the empty search results in each storefront. Write down every message you send to Apple and when. If the app comes back, you'll want to know which change or which reply did it.

After it returns, check it weekly. Gap in Your App checks where your app ranks in App Store search and whether AI assistants name it, then drafts keyword and review changes. A spreadsheet works too.

Questions people also ask

Why is my app missing from App Store search but still live by direct link?

Apple doesn't publish a single cause. Reported causes include a regional or per-account display problem, a delay after an update, and a keyword or name problem such as a trademark in the keyword field. Test other storefronts and accounts first, then audit your metadata.

How long should I wait before contacting Apple?

A forum reply suggests 24 to 48 hours after an update for search indexing to catch up. If you changed nothing and the app is still gone after that, use the App Review Contact Us form and include your app ID and affected storefronts.

Will changing my keywords bring the app back?

It might, if a trademark or competitor name was the cause. One developer reported recovery in about 48 hours after removing a trademark and replying to Apple. Apple hasn't confirmed that mechanism. Keywords need a new version, so submit a build.
